Being a parent takes time and energy, and addiction can completely derail someone’s life. We
interviewed a mother and former client of Sojourner about her experience in recovery. Here’s
what she had to say:
“My life before Sojourner’s was really bad. I was living in a tent and I just wasn’t eating right. I
was doing drugs every single day.”
She described her life before recovery as stressful and exhausting. When she found out she
was pregnant, she knew it was time for real change.
“I was just tired of the life that I was living, being in an abusive relationship. I just didn’t want to
be in that life anymore. I found out I was pregnant and I did not want to lose another child… that
was one main factor that made me decide to go to rehab.”
This client felt surrounded by support – and for the first time, she didn’t feel alone. She knew
Sojourner was the change she needed to finally get clean.
“Being pregnant in Sojourner’s – it was different. I had a lot of help, a lot of support,” she added.
“After I had her, it just got better. I actually got to keep her. She’s the first one out of four kids
that I got to keep.”
She also shared that Sojourner helped her build lasting friendships.
“The prenatal program brought me a lot of friends – a lot of mom friends.”
No one should be alone in their recovery, especially parents working hard to care for their
children while healing themselves. If you’d like to learn more, click here.
