A Circle of Support in Our Community

In News, Community

At Community Health Alliance, outreach is more than something we do — it’s part of who we are. Each month, we step beyond the walls of the clinic and into the community to connect with individuals facing hardship, isolation, or uncertainty about what comes next.

This monthly outreach effort is led by Christine Birhanzl, Sojourner Recovery Service’s Director of Recovery Services. Christine’s work reflects a deep commitment to supporting individuals impacted by substance use, homelessness, and barriers to care throughout Butler County. Alongside her role at Community Health Alliance, she also founded SLIM (Saving Lives In Ministry), an organization created to fill critical gaps in the community through street outreach, connection to care, and the distribution of essential items like food, blankets, and necessities for those living outdoors. SLIM also helps individuals obtain IDs so they can access treatment and services.

On the third Sunday of every month, Christine and our outreach team distribute 250 resource bags throughout the community. Each bag includes practical items, but it also carries something just as important: a reminder that help is available. Stapled to every bag is a resource card from the Butler County Family and Children First Council, along with Christine’s business card, offering a direct connection to support.

These Sundays are not only about handing out supplies. They are about showing up, talking with people, listening, and building trust. For many individuals, outreach becomes the first step toward treatment, stability, or simply the realization that they are not alone.

This commitment doesn’t pause when the weather turns harsh. Even in the middle of cold winter days, Christine and the CHA outreach team continue to go out, because the needs don’t disappear when temperatures drop.

Every month, those 250 bags represent more than materials. They represent conversation, connection, and a circle of support — and a clear message that recovery and care are always within reach.
